European T20 World Cup Qualifier 2025 Review: Italy Qualify for their First Ever Cricket World Cup!

The Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 comes to a wrap with the top two teams in the points table— Netherlands and Italy qualifying for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. 

Especially, the last day of the Europe Regional Final on July 11 (Friday) glimpsed a thrilling double header contest where all four teams had a chance to secure a spot in top two with Guernsey being eliminated from the qualification race.  

Ultimately, Italy was fortunate enough to qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup, even after losing to the Netherlands by 9 wickets due to their superior net-run-rate. 

On the other hand, Jersey, despite achieving a 1-wicket victory against Scotland, failed to secure a berth in the ICC’s marquee event due to their inferior NRR compared to Italy.  

Here is a detailed review of the five teams that participated in the very recently wrapped-up World Cup Europe Regional Final, highlighted along with the top batting and bowling stats. 

Guernsey (5th Position): 1 Point and -2.517 NRR 

Following a 7-wicket loss to Italy (on July 05) and an abandoned match against Scotland (on July 06), the qualification chances for Guernsey became NULL when they faced a 22-run loss to Jersey (on July 08).  

So, a win or loss in their final game against the Netherlands (on July 09) wouldn’t have made any difference in their qualification scenario.

Following an abandoned match against Guernsey (on July 06), Scotland secured a thrilling run victory against the Netherlands and lost to Italy by 12 runs (on July 09). 

Still, they were in contention as they were required to pull off a victory against Jersey (on July 11) by a huge margin to keep their chances alive of grabbing an overall of 5 points and finishing in the top two. 

Scotland’s Last-Ball Defeat to Jersey: 

Scotland had a last chance to secure a spot in the T20 World Cup 2026 as they were required to defend a modest target of 135 against Jersey. An early collapse from their batting order ruined their chances of setting high targets despite Matthew Cross’s unbeaten 40-ball 43-run knock (including 3 fours). 

Moreover, the 2-fers from Mark Watt (2/22 in 4 overs), Safyaan Sharif (2/32 in 4 overs), and Chris Greaves (2/26 in 4 overs) weren’t enough to restrict the chasing abilities of the Jersey batters.

Despite a poor start to their campaign with a 7-wicket loss to the Netherlands (on July 05) and an abandoned game against Italy (on July 06), Jersey made a remarkable comeback. The Charles Perchard led-side securing back-to-back victories against Guernsey by 22 runs and Scotland by 1 wicket (on July 08th and 11th, respectively).

Especially, the last game for Jersey against Scotland saw Nick Greenwood leading the team from the front in a 134-run chase. His 36-ball-49 runs (including 7 fours) steered his team to a last-ball victory with 1 wicket to spare. 

Qualification Scenario for Jersey After 1-Wicket Win vs Scotland 

Securing a victory in the last ball of the match against Scotland by a narrow margin didn’t guarantee Jersey a spot in the T20 World Cup 2026. 

The qualification chances for Jersey would have been straightforward if the Netherlands had lost their last game to Italy.

A superior NRR and Jersey’s victory against Scotland safeguarded Italy in such a way that even if they lost their last match to the Netherlands, all they required to do was keep the losing margin as low as possible. 

Overall, the Italians gained entry into their first-ever cricket World Cup despite facing a massive loss by 9 wickets to the Netherlands. Thanks to Jersey’s smallest victory margin by 1 wicket against Scotland, which turned out to be a boon for Italy. 

Netherlands (1st Position): 6 Points and +1.281 NRR 

The Netherlands had a great start to the European T20 World Cup Qualifier by triumphing against Jersey by 7 wickets (on July 05).

After facing a 6-run defeat to Scotland (on July 08), Scott Edwards and his men bounced back stronger by pulling off a tremendous 73-run victory against Guernsey (on July 09). 

Still, the Netherlands’ position ahead of their last clash wasn’t as safe as Italy’s, as they were in a must-win situation, particularly after Jersey’s victory against Scotland. 

A Dominating 9-Wicket Victory against Italy
