BCCI Silences Rumors of India’s Withdrawal from Pakistan-Involved Asia Cup 2025

Recently, several media reports conveyed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has planned to withdraw from the Asia Cup 2025 due to the ongoing political conflicts with Pakistan. 

Furthermore, the speculations peaked to its elevated level, pointing out BCCI’s reluctance to participate in both senior men’s tournament scheduled for September in India and Women’s Emerging Asia Cup planned for June in Sri Lanka. 

However, the Indian cricket board explained that no such announcement was made officially and deemed the news to be fake. 

After the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, many fans and experts urged the BCCI to stop playing against Pakistan. 

BCCI Secretary Clears Rumors on India’s Withdrawal from Asia Cup 2025 

Devajit Saikia, the secretary of BCCI, clarified that the decision to withdraw from the upcoming Asian tournaments hasn’t been discussed by the board nor communicated to the ACC about the exit: 

“No! Some media reports are speculating about BCCI’s decision to withdraw from the Asia Cup in both Senior and Women’s Emerging levels. However, such news is void of any reality as the BCCI is yet to discuss or take any steps about the forthcoming ACC events. 

Right now, we are mainly focused on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and the upcoming England series for both men and women. 

The discussions related to the Asia Cup or any other ACC events haven’t started yet. And any news or reports related to his matter are completely speculation and false. The BCCI is clear with its statement and will make an official announcement whenever the ACC events happen or any important decisions are made,” Saikia explained. 

Can the Asia Cup 2025 Be Played Without India? 

No! The Asia Cup 2025 cannot be played without India. One of the main reasons behind these speculations is the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the current Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president. 

As the ACC is being headed by Naqvi, the Pakistan cricket team still finds a way to participate in high-profile tournaments despite the terror attacks. In other words, BCCI couldn’t find a way to push Pakistan towards the exit, but can give a huge blow to PCB by withdrawing from the tournament. 

Also, it was reported that the Indian team wouldn’t participate in an ACC-organized tournament whose leader is a Pakistani minister. 

What Could be the Fate of the 2025 Asia Cup Without India? 

The Asia Cup 2025 would turn out to be a lackluster event without India due to countless reasons, out of which a few are listed below: 

• Struggle to get sponsors: In the past editions, a majority of the sponsors for the event were from India. 
• No Blockbuster clash of India vs Pakistan: This could lead to huge revenue losses for the ACC. 
• No Replacement for India: Mohsin Naqvi has no option to replace India with any other Asian team that could steer the tournament to huge financial success. 
• Financial crisis for other cricket boards: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’s cricket boards will face huge financial losses as they are dependent on the BCCI.  
• And so on…

BCCI’s Alternative Strategy to Avoid Pakistan in the Same Group of ICC Events  

Possibly, India and Pakistan won’t be placed in the same group for the upcoming ICC tournaments. BCCI is expected to discuss new plans at the ICC Annual Conference in Singapore from July 17th to 20th. 

Also, one of the closest sources to BCCI revealed that the India-Pakistan conflict is certain to be the main point of debate at the conference: 

“Possibly! This issue is certain to be discussed at the annual conference. While the chances of India and Pakistan playing in the ICC knockouts, there is are possibility of not placing them in the same group during the early stages of the tournament. This has been the traditional practice at ICC events,” the BCCI source told. 

This meeting holds great significance as this is the first one under Jay Shah’s tenure as the new chairman. 

Over the past decade, India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group in ICC tournaments. This intense rivalry was indeed a big jackpot for the broadcasters to generate huge revenue. If BCCI requests ICC for a separate group, then it would certainly be a big blow to the earnings of the broadcasters. 

Final Opinion 

Since the terror attacks in Mumbai in November 2008, Team India hasn’t travelled to Pakistan, and the bilateral series between these two teams was last played in 2012-13. Thereafter, these two teams faced off only in the Asia Cup and ICC tournaments. 

Following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor this year, it is unlikely that India will play against Pakistan in any of the upcoming high-profile events. 

The political tensions between India and Pakistan continue to influence the sports relationship. Also, the BCCI’s recent statement further adds uncertainty to India’s participation in ACC events.  

As the Hybrid model was agreed upon between these two nations till 2027, the board assured that the decisions about joining the Pakistan involved tournaments will be revealed via official channels.
