Canada Captain Nicholas Kirton’s Drug Bust Arrest Takes a New Twist: Bail Granted!
Canada men’s cricket team captain Nicholas Kirton, who was earlier arrested for drug-related charges, was granted bail. According to the reports, the batting all-rounder appeared in court in Barbados on Friday morning (April 04) and pleaded his innocence to get released on bail.
The fact to be known for the unversed is that individuals possessing upto two ounces (approximately 57 grams) of cannabis for personal usage wouldn’t come under a criminal offense, unless they carry it in public. By doing so, a heavy fine is imposed.
In the case of Nicholas, he breached the Canadian laws by carrying almost 160 times the allowable volume, which led the police to take him into custody.
Who is Nicholas Kirton?
Nicholas Kirton, born in Barbados, represented the West Indies at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
Born to a Canadian mother, Nicholas became eligible to play international cricket for Canada in 2018. The left-handed all-rounder became the all-format captain in 2024 and scored 514 runs in 21 ODIs and 627 runs in 28 T20Is so far.
Allegations on Nicholas Kirton’s Drug Deal Controversy
Nicholas was taken into police custody in Barbados on Sunday (March 30) for carrying a bulk quantity of banned substance, as the news was widely reported by the Jamaica Gleaner— the most trusted news source in the Western Hemisphere.
The 26-year-old was alleged to have been carrying 20 pounds of cannabis (approximately 9 kgs) that was seized at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados.
In addition to supplying cannabis (known as ganja or marijuana), the Starcom Network charged that he has been convicted of trafficking, importation, and illicit possession.
‘Try to Uphold Highest Standards of Integrity’: Cricket Canada’s Statement on Kirton’s Controversy
A few days before Kirton’s bail, Cricket Canada stated that they would look into the matter seriously and pledged to remain resilient to preserve the highest standards of integrity:

We should take this matter seriously and remain passionate in promoting the highest standards of integrity and legitimacy within the sport. Further updates will be provided upon receiving more details,” Cricket Canada stated.
Also, the nation’s cricket governing body assured that while this issue is being investigated, the national team’s focus will be completely on preparations for the inaugural edition of the North American Cup that takes place between April 19th and 27th:
While the situation is being worked out, we would like to notify the public that our national team will be entirely focused on their preparations for the forthcoming North American Cup, set to commence on April 19th in the Cayman Islands.
Cricket Canada is always dedicated to providing support to the team as they continue to represent our nation with complete respect and professionalism,” Cricket Canada’s official statement.
Will Kirton make his return to the Canadian National Team?
Even though Kirton returns to Canada, his position in the national cricket team remains a question. The Barbadian-born Canadian cricketer is mandated to return to Barbados for the court’s next hearing on June 02 (Monday).
Moreover, Canada is set to compete in its inaugural North American Cup this month against four different teams —Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and the USA.
In conclusion, Nicholas’ role as a captain and player is now under scrutiny that depends completely on the outcome of this case.
