Craig Williams Becomes New Head Coach of Namibia Men’s Team
Ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027, Cricket Namibia has taken a big decision by appointing the former Namibian cricketer Craig Williams as the new head coach of the men’s national cricket team.
The 41-year-old played 400+ games for his nation across all formats since his debut in 2007 and retired in 2022, having scored 15,000+ runs. Since his retirement, the legendary all-rounder joined Uganda’s coaching staff as a batting consultant in late 2023. His guidance was instrumental for Uganda’s first-ever T20 World Cup qualification in 2024, played in the United States and the West Indies.
Thanks to Uganda Cricket for letting go of a talented coach early, allowing Namibia to secure a coaching gem. As a result, Williams replaces Pierre de Bruyn, who recently stepped down after his 6-year successful stint as the team’s head coach.
Craig Williams Speaks About His Appointment: ‘Ready to Give My Best as Head Coach’
On representing Namibia as the coach, Craig Williams feels honored to return to the national team:
“Yes! This is one of the honorable moments in my life to return to the national team, but this time as the head coach. It is a satisfaction to represent Namibia in any role, and this is the perfect moment to lead the FNB Eagles, and I’m excited.
Especially, Cricket Namibia is accomplishing impressive tasks right from setting up the new stadium to the High Performance Centres. Also, having complete support from the board and staff members makes the deal great for me. I’m excited to take on this new journey with this dedicated team.
As my family was extremely proud and supportive, the decision was easy for me to come back. Moreover, coaching at an international level is a big responsibility, and I am 100% committed. Earlier, I served Namibia as a player, and now I’m ready to contribute my highest potential in the upcoming new chapter as the head coach,” Craig said.
Cricket Namibia Sets Target on ICC ODI World Cup 2027
Johan Muller, the CEO of Cricket Namibia, praised Craig’s appointment, whose experience and understanding of players opens a new chapter for the men’s team:
“Congrats! Craig Williams’ entry as the FNB Eagles’ new head coach promises to open a fresh chapter for our men’s national team. He (Craig) not only brings world-class cricketing experience but also has an in-depth understanding of our players, culture, and goals.
Moreover, we are set to enter a new era with a newly formed, highly qualified coaching staff. In addition to setting our focus on the fourth T20 World Cup qualification, we proudly represent Namibia, hosting the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 at home. We are sure that the Eagles will continue to ascend under Craig’s guidance,” Muller said.
Namibia’s Achievements Under Pierre de Bruyn’s Coaching
It is to be noted that Namibian cricket secured its ODI status under de Bruyn’s coaching after concluding as the finalist of the ICC World Cricket League Division Two in 2019.
Also, the team participated in a hat-trick of T20 World Cups in 2021, 2022, and 2024. Notably, Namibia qualified for the Super 12s of the 2021 edition by triumphing over Ireland, the Netherlands, and the former champions Sri Lanka in the group stages.
Can Craig Continue Pierre de Bruyn’s Legacy as Namibia’s Head Coach?
Namibian cricket enters a new era as Craig Williams sparks fresh hopes of guiding the national team to their fourth consecutive T20 World Cup, thereby extending Pierre’s legacy to reach new heights. Additionally, the focus shifts to 50-over World Cup qualification, which Namibia will co-host along with Zimbabwe and South Africa in 2027.
However, the cricket world is eager to see whether Namibia, under Williams’ coaching, can succeed in making their second appearance in the forthcoming 14th edition of the ODI World Cup, their first since 2003.
