The mission isn’t merely about selecting bowlers for the Test team—it runs deeper, with a long-term plan to transform how fast bowling is developed and nurtured across all levels of English cricket.

Ed Barney, England’s performance director, exemplifies this shift in his approach to coaching young bowlers. Speaking about practising with his son, he remarked, “Bowl as fast as you can, and be less concerned about control. We can work on that later, once the pace is there.” This reversal in mindset from the traditional emphasis on control reflects the broader ambitions of England’s cricketing strategy.

Prioritising Pace Over Control

Historically, England’s approach to fast bowling has been conservative, focusing on maintaining control and accuracy. This mindset, however, has not delivered the results needed to consistently dominate in Test cricket, particularly on foreign pitches. Barney explained, “Historically, we would value control, but what we are trying to say is that we really value pace and exciting, dynamic fast bowling.” The new philosophy recognises that pace, coupled with the traditional skills of swing and seam, is essential for success.

England’s managing director, Rob Key, echoed this sentiment earlier this year, stating in an interview with The Telegraph: “I don’t care how many wickets you take. I want to know how hard you are running in, how hard you are hitting the pitch, and are you able to sustain pace at 85-88mph.” The emphasis is now on speed and aggression, and England is not afraid to select bowlers purely based on their ability to bowl fast, even if their current stats aren’t impressive.

New Generation of Quick Bowlers

England’s pace revolution is well underway, with the selectors opting for bowlers like Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone, and Josh Hull—youngsters who can generate serious speed. Barney and Key’s work on the ECB’s “pace project” aims to change how English cricket approaches fast bowling development. The initiative focuses on nurturing young bowlers, helping them build pace before refining their accuracy and swing.

David Court, head of player identification at the ECB, emphasised the importance of a varied attack but noted that all these attributes would benefit from being performed at a higher speed. He pointed to England’s famous 2005 Ashes bowling attack, where the combination of genuine pace from Steve Harmison, Simon Jones, and Andrew Flintoff, alongside Matthew Hoggard’s controlled swing, was a winning formula.

Importance of Data and Biomechanics

The ECB has also embraced technology and data to guide this new strategy. Biomechanical testing of young bowlers at Loughborough allows the ECB to assess their action, identifying areas for improvement while also highlighting potential injury risks. Court explains: “The profile we get at Loughborough ranks each bowler in each of those areas against our historical data set… We’ve identified the common traits of those that bowl 85mph-plus.” This data-driven approach ensures that the next generation of fast bowlers is not only fast but also durable and technically sound.

This effort to increase pace also extends to working closely with counties. In the County Championship, 80% of deliveries from seamers are bowled at under 82mph. However, Test cricket requires a different tempo, with 62% of deliveries exceeding 83mph. The challenge is ensuring that county cricket nurtures bowlers who can sustain higher speeds while balancing the rigours of regular first-class matches.
