India vs Sri Lanka: ODI Series Preview
India’s cricket squad is gearing up for an exciting ODI series in Sri Lanka, featuring prominent names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This series is crucial as it forms part of their preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Return of the Titans: Rohit and Kohli
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been selected for the ODI squad, despite earlier speculation they might skip the tour. After the T20 World Cup celebration in Mumbai on July 4, both players took a break abroad with their families. Their inclusion in the 15-man squad dispels rumours about their potential absence and highlights their commitment to the team’s cause.
New Roles and Returning Stars
Shubman Gill, who has been in sensational form, takes up the vice-captaincy in both white-ball formats. His elevation comes after leading a second-string squad to a 4-1 victory in Zimbabwe. Gill’s prolific run-scoring has made him the second-highest run-getter in ODIs since the beginning of 2023, marking him as a pivotal player for India.
The squad sees the return of KL Rahul after an extended injury break. Joining him is Shreyas Iyer, who has been selected despite losing his BCCI central contract earlier this year. Both Rahul and Iyer add depth and experience to the squad, alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who is making a comeback after his car accident in December 2022.
Emerging Talent: Dube and Parag
Shivam Dube, a seam-bowling allrounder, has been recalled to the ODI squad. Dube’s impressive performance in IPL 2023, especially his prowess against spin for Chennai Super Kings, has earned him this opportunity. Riyan Parag’s excellent domestic form, which saw him top the run charts in the Deodhar Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, has also been recognised with selections in both formats.
Bowling Strength and New Faces
The pace attack, led by Mohammed Siraj, will feature Arshdeep Singh and Khaleel Ahmed. Harshit Rana, who had a standout season with Kolkata Knight Riders, has received his maiden ODI call-up. Washington Sundar, following his Player-of-the-Series performance in Zimbabwe, and Axar Patel form the spin-bowling allrounders, providing balance to the team.
T20 Squad Dynamics
Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain for the T20Is in Sri Lanka, continuing his rise in Indian cricket. Gill is expected to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, both of whom were instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup win. Sanju Samson retains his place as an additional wicketkeeping option. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, despite notable performances, have been omitted. Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube are likely to take on finishing roles in the T20 setup.
Kuldeep Yadav will be part of the ODI squad but not the T20Is, with Ravi Bishnoi stepping in as the frontline wristspinner. Yuzvendra Chahal remains out of both squads, continuing his absence since the World Cup.
New Era Under Coach Gautam Gambhir
This tour marks the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s coach, following Rahul Dravid’s departure post the T20 World Cup. Gambhir’s leadership will be tested as he looks to guide India through this series, starting with three T20Is in Pallekele on July 27, 28, and 30, followed by three ODIs in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.
