Report: Pakistan’s T20 Revamp Ahead of NZ Tour

Pakistan’s T20 Squad Revamp: Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim Return

In an exciting turn of events for Pakistan cricket, the national team has announced its squad for the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand. This series marks a significant moment as Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim make their much-awaited return to the side, with Amir’s comeback being his first since 2020 and Wasim’s since 2023.

Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim: A Welcome Addition

The inclusion of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim has generated a buzz in the cricketing world. Their return is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s dynamics. The selection committee, functioning without a chief selector, demonstrated its confidence in these players, recognising their potential to turn games in Pakistan’s favour.

Usman Khan’s Debut and Squad Consistency

The squad also welcomes Usman Khan, who recently switched from representing UAE to Pakistan. His inclusion, alongside the retention of Fakhar Zaman despite his PSL struggles, shows a blend of fresh talent and experienced players. “Being chosen to represent one’s country is the ultimate dream and goal for any athlete,” Usman Khan expressed in a PCB press release, highlighting his elation and commitment upon selection.

Strategic Selections and Captaincy Changes

This series also sees a change in leadership, with Babar Azam resuming the captaincy. The PCB’s decision came after a contentious process involving the removal of Shaheen Shah Afridi from the role. The team welcomes back Naseem Shah, returning after injury, and features emerging players like Irfan Khan, signalling a blend of experience and youthful exuberance.

“The decision to include Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir was a straightforward one, given their availability for selection and considering Haris Rauf’s injury and Mohammad Nawaz’s current form,” selector Wahab Riaz stated, highlighting the strategic reasoning behind their selection.

Coaching Staff Rejig and Series Excitement

Behind the scenes, there’s been a shuffle in the coaching department. Azhar Mahmood takes over as the head coach, an interim position that sees him depart from his role at Surrey. Wahab Riaz takes on the dual role of “senior team manager” with Mansoor Rana, while Mohammad Yousuf and Saeed Ajmal continue to contribute in their respective coaching roles.

New Zealand’s tour to Pakistan is scheduled to start on 14 April, with T20 matches in Rawalpindi and Lahore set to run from 18 to 27 April. This series not only promises high-octane cricket but also marks a new chapter in Pakistan’s T20 strategy, with veteran players and new faces joining forces under revised leadership.
