Chris Silverwood Steps Down as Sri Lanka Coach
Silverwood Ends Tenure with Sri Lanka
Chris Silverwood, the former England cricket coach, has announced his resignation as the head coach of Sri Lanka’s men’s team. After two years at the helm, Silverwood’s decision comes after Sri Lanka’s less-than-stellar performance in this month’s T20 World Cup, hosted in the West Indies and the USA.
Family Calls Home
Silverwood cited the demanding nature of international coaching and the extended periods away from family as pivotal reasons for his departure. “Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones,” Silverwood remarked. He further shared the emotional weight of his decision: “After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together.”
Highlights of Silverwood’s Coaching Stint
Appointed in April 2022, Silverwood’s tenure saw some notable highs despite the recent lows. Under his guidance, Sri Lanka claimed the Asia Cup in 2022 and reached the finals again the following year. However, the team’s performance in global tournaments under his tenure has been inconsistent, with the team failing to progress beyond the group stages in the recent T20 World Cup and finishing ninth in last year’s 50-over World Cup.
Legacy and Departure
Silverwood described his time with Sri Lanka Cricket as a “real honour,” reflecting on a period that included winning four out of eight Test series. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for both him and Sri Lanka cricket as they look to rebuild and refocus for future challenges, starting with their upcoming three Tests in England on August 21.
