Historic Test Match at Stormont
Stormont is set to host its inaugural Test match, marking a significant moment in cricket history. In July, Ireland will face Zimbabwe, making the Belfast venue the 123rd cricket ground to host a men’s Test match. This encounter will also be the first Test format match between the two nations, setting the stage for a thrilling clash.
Postponement of Australia Series
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming Test, the scheduled men’s Twenty20 and one-day international series with Australia in August has been postponed. Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom cited “a lack of permanent facilities and the cost of temporary infrastructure” as the primary reasons for this “difficult decision”.
Ireland’s Busy Cricket Schedule
Looking ahead, Ireland’s cricket calendar remains packed. The senior women’s team is poised to host ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka and England in the later summer months. Additionally, the men’s team will embark on a quest to qualify for the T20 World Cup, starting with an opening qualifier against the UAE.
Furthermore, the Irish men have already secured their spot in the T20 World Cup in the USA, with their first match scheduled against India in New York. The team is also slated to face South Africa in a multi-ball series in Abu Dhabi during the autumn, adding more high-stakes games to their schedule.
A Momentous Occasion
Cricket Ireland is gearing up to “create a little piece of history” at Stormont, as expressed by Deutrom. He enthused about the upcoming match, “We look forward to seeing fans coming along to support the men’s Test squad as they seek to follow up on the terrific inaugural Test win over Afghanistan in March.”
Deutrom also discussed the broader challenges and strategies in managing Ireland’s cricketing commitments. He stressed the need for a long-term solution to enhance facilities and mentioned that hosting some matches in neutral venues overseas remains a possibility, exemplified by this year’s series with South Africa.
