Ricky Ponting Takes Charge at Washington Freedom
Ponting’s New Venture in US Cricket
Ricky Ponting, the illustrious former Australia captain, is embarking on a new coaching journey with the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket (MLC). His two-year contract follows the tenure of fellow Australian Greg Shipperd, under whom Washington secured a respectable third-place finish in the league’s inaugural season.
Washington Freedom’s New Era
As Washington Freedom gears up for the second edition of the tournament in July, Ponting’s arrival signals a fresh era. “Cricket is really on the rise in the US,” Ponting remarked, embracing his new challenge. “I’ve been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom and, while it’s a bit surreal to be replacing my mate Greg Shipperd, there’s probably no one better to set up a successful franchise.”
Ponting’s Illustrious Coaching Career
Ponting is no stranger to coaching at high levels, currently leading the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His coaching portfolio also includes a stint with Mumbai Indians and various T20 assignments with the Australian national team.
MLC’s Potential to Rival Top Leagues
The MLC stands as cricket’s ambitious project to gain a foothold in the United States, backed by significant investment, notably from the IPL. With IPL heavyweights like Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals investing in MLC teams, the league is poised to make a substantial impact. This investment strategy mirrors the involvement of Australian state organisations Cricket New South Wales and Cricket Victoria.
The timing couldn’t be better, with the United States co-hosting this year’s T20 World Cup alongside the West Indies. The success of the MLC, coupled with the global exposure of the T20 World Cup, could propel cricket to new heights in the US.
