Shakib Al Hasan: The Journey Towards Retirement

A Planned Exit

Shakib Al Hasan, the illustrious cricketer from Bangladesh, has meticulously delineated his retirement, suggesting that his swansong in international cricket might be the 2025 Champions Trophy. He plans to withdraw from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup and is pondering over retiring from Tests post the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India.

One Step at a Time

“I will retire all at once, but I will stop playing each format one by one,” Shakib revealed, indicating that his formal retirement announcement is expected to be after the 2025 Champions Trophy. This structured exit strategy reflects his unwavering dedication to the game and his aspiration to leave an enduring legacy.

The Reluctant Captain

In a revealing dialogue with T-Sports, Shakib opened up about his reservations regarding the captaincy and his dialogues with the team management. He admitted to nearly relinquishing the captaincy after the Asia Cup but chose to persist until the World Cup after thoughtful conversations.

He initially rejected the captaincy for the Asia Cup, post Tamim Iqbal’s resignation in August, but accepted considering the team’s needs. “Given the current reality, I am captain only till the World Cup. Not a day more,” he asserted.

A Desire for Simplicity

Shakib has expressed a longing to concentrate on his game and contribute to Bangladesh cricket without the supplementary burden of captaincy. “I want to smile, enjoy my game, perform for Bangladesh,” he articulated, focusing on his ambition to add value through his gameplay rather than through leadership.

Leading Bangladesh in the Asia Cup

In his second stint as the official ODI captain, Shakib has captained Bangladesh in the Asia Cup, achieving triumphs against Afghanistan and India. Presently, the team is in India, gearing up for their World Cup warm-up matches against Sri Lanka and England, with their inaugural tournament match slated against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala.
