Sir Geoffrey Boycott Faces Second Throat Cancer Diagnosis

Geoffrey Boycott: Facing Throat Cancer Diagnosis Again

Second Cancer Diagnosis for Geoffrey Boycott

Sir Geoffrey Boycott, the former England cricket captain, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer for the second time. At 83 years old, Boycott received the news last week that his cancer had returned, following his previous battle in 2002, which involved chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.

Upcoming Surgery and Boycott’s Statement

Boycott is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the cancer in two weeks. In a heartfelt statement to the Daily Telegraph, Boycott shared: “In the last few weeks I have had an MRI scan, CT scan, a PET scan and two biopsies and it has now been confirmed I have throat cancer and will require an operation. From past experience I realise that to overcome cancer a second time I will need excellent medical treatment and quite a bit of luck and, even if the operation is successful, every cancer patient knows they have to live with the possibility of it returning. So I will just get on with it and hope for the best.”

Boycott’s Illustrious Cricket Career

Throughout his cricket career, Boycott was renowned for his remarkable skill and determination. From 1964 to 1982, he played 108 Tests for England, scoring an impressive 8,114 runs. In 1978, he captained the team in four matches, stepping in for the injured Mike Brearley. Boycott’s first-class career with Yorkshire was equally stellar, boasting an average of 56.83, with 151 centuries and over 48,000 runs.

Post-Retirement: Broadcasting Success

After retiring from professional cricket, Boycott transitioned into a successful broadcasting career. He became a beloved voice in cricket commentary, joining the BBC’s Test Match Special team. His 14-year tenure as a commentator ended in 2020, influenced by his quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2018 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Geoffrey Boycott’s resilience and determination, both on and off the field, continue to inspire many. As he faces this latest challenge, the cricketing world stands in solidarity, hoping for his swift recovery.
