Kuldeep Yadav: The Evolution of a Spin Maestro at the Cricket World Cup
The Art of Pace in Spin Bowling
Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, has been making waves in the white-ball cricket arena. His recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular, with a notable increase in the pace of his deliveries. But what’s even more intriguing is the lesser strain he’s been putting on his right leg during his delivery stride.
Over the past few years, Kuldeep’s prowess in One Day Internationals (ODIs) has been commendable. And 2023 seems to be his year. With a staggering 35 wickets in just 17 innings, boasting an average of 16.31 and an economy rate of 4.68, he’s truly been India’s bowling gem. Only Nepal’s Sandeep Lamicchane has managed to surpass him with 43 wickets.
Reflecting on his journey, Kuldeep shared:
“Everyone told me my deliveries required pace but no one told me how to do it.”
He further elaborated on the importance of pace, especially on turning pitches. “Important aspect on a turner is the speed at which the ball turns. At times there are slow turners, important is to vary pace.”
A Career-Defining Moment
Kuldeep’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A significant turning point was his knee surgery in 2021. It was during his rehabilitation that Ashish Kaushik, the former India team physio, gave him a piece of advice that would change his bowling dynamics. He was advised to reduce the pressure on his right leg.
Recalling that phase, Kuldeep said, “Once I was coming back from injury, it was physio Ashish Kaushik who advised that the load on my right leg should be less.” This change wasn’t immediate. “It took around six months to get the rhythm back,” he added.
A Coach’s Perspective
Paras Mhambrey, India’s bowling coach, couldn’t be more pleased with Kuldeep’s progress in the ODI format. He believes that Kuldeep deserves all the credit for his transformation. “He’s worked on certain things, made those technical changes and you could see that in his bowling,” Mhambrey observed. He further added:
“It’s not just the numbers, it’s also the way you adapt. He offers a different variety to the team.”
The Spin Trio and the Road Ahead
India’s decision to play the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, and Kuldeep in their World Cup opener was a strategic one. However, Kuldeep believes that this combination might undergo changes depending on the venue.

He opined, “Not sure about the entire tournament, but over the years, we have seen you can play with three spinners in Chennai.” He also added that facing a team with three quality spinners would be a challenge for any batting unit.
In conclusion, Kuldeep Yadav’s journey in the Cricket World Cup has been one of resilience, adaptability, and continuous evolution. His story serves as an inspiration for budding cricketers and is a testament to the fact that with the right guidance, dedication, and hard work, one can achieve great heights.
