No Future in PSL? Corbin Bosch Opens Up on Snubbing PSL Contract to Join MI in IPL 2025

PSL 2025: South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch finally reacted to the legal notice served by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for breaching his Pakistan Super League (PSL) contract with Peshawar Zalmi. 

The 30-year-old amidst the heated controversy opened up and clarified his decision to opt out of PSL 2025, citing career opportunities and international exposure as the main reasons to join Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. 

Since the PSL’s inception in 2016, this is the first time its schedule conflicts with IPL. As a consequence, several players plan to withdraw from the PSL to participate in India’s rich-cash-studded league. Specifically, the unsold players in the IPL 2025 mega auction, who acquired a contract in PSL, are returning to the world’s richest T20 franchise league as replacements. 

Beginning of Corbin Bosch vs PSL Controversy 

Bosch went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction for his base price of INR 30 lakhs in the previous year November. Later, he secured a contract with Peshawar Zalmi in the diamond category ranging from INR 50 lakh to INR 75 lakh (US$ 60,000 to US$ 80,000) in the January PSL 2025 draft. 

On March 08 (Saturday), Mumbai Indians signed Corbin for INR 75 lakh as a replacement for the injured South African pacer Lizaad Williams. Although the Proteas cricketer is eager to make his IPL debut, he is already familiar with the MI franchise. Having been part of MI Cape Town’s triumphant campaign in SA20 2025, the Durban-born cricketer scored 191 runs and bagged 11 wickets, out of the eight matches played in the third league’s third season. 

Also, this is Bosch’s second franchise in IPL, having been part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad, but didn’t get an opportunity to make a debut till now. 

Following the pace bowling all-rounder’s decision to ditch his PSL contract, the PCB sent a legal notice to Bosch asking him to provide a reasonable explanation for withdrawing himself from his commitments, in terms of professional and contractual agreements. 

Bosch’s Explanation to PCB’s Legal Notice: Cricket Pakistan’s Report

Bosch explained to the PCB officials clarifying that his decision didn’t mean to disrespect PSL and had to focus on his future, with Mumbai Indians being one such strong IPL team having multiple franchises in other leagues. Here is the Cricket Pakistan’s report: 

“Yes! Corbin Bosch provided his explanation to PCB officials. He said that it was a strategy to enhance his career and didn’t mean any disrespect to PSL.  Also, the South African said that he wanted to prioritize his future with Mumbai Indians, which is not only a powerful team in IPL but also has other franchises in multiple T20 leagues. This could benefit his career tremendously,” the Cricket Pakistan’s report read. 

The all-rounder’s explanation conveys the fact that he has a broader platform to showcase his talents at an international level given that the IPL team Mumbai Indians operates these franchises in other foreign T20 leagues such as: 

• SA20: MI Cape Town in SA20
• Major Cricket League (MLC): MI New York
• International League T20 (ILT20): MI Emirates 

It is understood that Bosch’s participation in IPL was to prioritize tougher challenges and gain exposure to the global level which helps him enhance his cricketing skills, rather than participating in a low-competitive event like the PSL.  

Will Corbin Bosch Get a Chance to Play All Matches of IPL 2025? 

Despite Corbin Bosch replacing Lizaad Williams in IPL 2025, there are fewer chances for him to feature in MI’s regular playing XI setup in all matches. He needs to make use of the opportunity by exhibiting his best performance as an impact player. 

Particularly on the spin-friendly tracks, Mumbai might prefer the Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman or spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner instead of securing the South African’s services as a right-handed batter and medium pacer.

PCB’s Strong Message to All PSL 2025 Players 

PCB’s legal notice to Corbin Bosch sends a strong warning to all players participating in PSL 2025. The Board is cautious that all players abide by their contracts and commitments and wouldn’t hesitate to take severe action against anyone who fails to do so. 

Has Peshawar Zalmi found a replacement for Corbin Bosch Ahead of PSL 2025? 

As PCB is in the process of evaluating Bosch’s explanation, Peshawar Zalmi has found a replacement by inviting the Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen in the supplementary draft, who was the star performer in this year’s Big Bash League. 

PSL vs IPL Schedule Clash: A Serious Complications for Participating Players

Starting from the inaugural edition in 2016, the PSL window usually takes place between February and March. 

Due to Pakistan’s international cricket hosting commitments and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, held this year in February, the league’s 10th season with no other options left, is scheduled between April 11 and May 18. This resulted in the PSL 2025 clash with the 18th season of IPL, which started on March 22 (Saturday), with the final match set to take place on May 25 (Sunday). 

The shift from the usual February-March window to April-May created several complications for some players holding dual contracts with the PSL and IPL teams.  

Will Corbin Bosch be Banned from PSL? Final Opinion 

As PCB’s official statement is expected later this month, there are chances that Bosch could face a ban from future editions of PSL or be handed a penalty. 

Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed a 2-year IPL ban on the England batter Harry Brook for last-minute withdrawal from the 18th season to prioritize international cricket commitments. Possibly, the PCB could follow a similar approach with players who opt out of the PSL. 

Cricket Pakistan’s report revealed that some officials are discussing Bosch’s career in PSL, considering him to ban for the next few seasons, few others are viewing against this decision as it could affect the inclusion of other cricketers as well: 

“Certainly! Some supporters claim that the league’s integrity is important and consider Bosch’s PSL ban for future editions as a cautionary measure for others. However, few others believe that a ban might affect other players’ participation by conveying a negative message. Rather, a symbolic penalty is suggested to deal with this matter and the PCB is expected to decide in the coming days,” the report added a few more facts. 

Finally, it remains to be seen if Bosch faces a ban from PSL for violating the contract’s terms and conditions or be given a slight punishment.
